The news assignment desk. The surrounding plasma screens have all the other Bay Area TV stations, plus internal NBC News feeds, and all our own microwave and satellite links.
Damon LaRose in TOC. This is the hot seat of the entire building, where all incoming and outgoing video streams are controlled. With modern technology, Damon (seen here) is able to control almost any parameter of any video or audio gear in the building. The way the new control systems work is that you can dial up any device, and then the device's control panel is in front of you, just as if you were in front of the device, so you can adjust any parameter of any device in the building from one seat.
TOC commercial prep/feed area. These workstations digitize and feed material to the commercial playback servers at NBC Burbank in Los Angeles. This is also where the on-air operations and KNTV/KSTS transmitters are controlled from.
Nearly all the tape decks are used for backup and archive purposes only, since all on-air news video comes from disc-based servers running non-linear edit software. There's at least one of every format here: D-1, D-2, Digital Betacam, Beta SX, Beta SP, MMX, DVCPro, MiniDV, VHS, SVHS, Hi-8, DVD (of course) and even 3/4" U-Matic.

Also seen here is the plasma control panel for the satellite dishes and receivers, as well as 2-way and intercom panels.
Incidentally, the Ellen DeGeneres show seen on the air is produced at NBC Burbank Studio 11, upstairs and a few buildings away from where this room is tied to with fiber for on-air control. The show itself is airing off a tape playing in Burbank directly up to this room via fiber.
